LENGTH OF HIRE:  Winter 2014 – Spring 2014 (6 months)
SALARY:  Unpaid internship (At the conclusion of the internship a letter of reference will be issued)
The U.S. Embassy in Prague, Czech Republic, is seeking an employee for the part-time position of Student intern in the Office of Defense Cooperation.
The position is 15-20 hours per week with a flexible schedule (depending on class schedule, working hours can be scheduled in the mornings or afternoons, half days or full days).  Embassy working hours are 0800-1630, Monday-Friday.  Occasional evening hours are required for receptions and other events.  Working hours may be adjusted or cut back during school exams.
BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
The Office of Defense Cooperation of the U.S. Embassy works with the Ministry of Defense and the Army of the Czech Republic in matters of security cooperation.  Interns work on a variety of projects focused on record keeping and logistical coordination under the supervision of U.S. military officers.  Duties include scanning and archiving historical program documentation, coordinating event schedules and details pertaining to official visits, and some clerical/administrative duties.  Interns should have a strong background in international affairs, good interpersonal skills, excellent organizational and communication skills, good computer skills, flexibility, and a positive attitude. 
QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

NOTE: All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

  1. University students (must be an enrolled student for the duration of the internship). The university approval with unpaid student’s internship is required. (The U.S. Embassy has a working agreement in this regard with the University of New York in Prague.  Applicants from other universities have to secure an agreement for an unpaid internship on their own).
  2. Czech language knowledge, spoken and written, (fluent - 4/4) is required. English language knowledge, spoken and written, (fluent - 4/4) is required.
  3. A minimum of six months commitment is required (longer terms are possible if both parties agree) as well as commitment to work 15 to 20 hours a week.

Standard procedure for obraining ECTS credits for completed work placements and internships:

At the beginning of the semester in which the internship will be completed, the student enrolls for a C-type course in accordance with the 1-5 the abbreviation of PS1-PS5 with respect to the duration of the relevant internship / practice. The length of internship / practice also represents the number of credits. The division is as follows:

 

PS1: Work placement (practice) of 14 days to 1 month; 1 ECTS credit

PS2: Work placement (practice) in the range of 1 to 2 months: 2 ECTS credits

PS3: Work placement (practice) ranging from 3 to 4 months: 3 ECTS credits

PS4: Work placement (practice) in the range of 5 to 6 months: 4 ECTS credits

PS5: Work placement (practice) over 6 months: 5 ECTS credits

 

At the end of each semester, virtual exam dates will be listed for each type of internship (PS 1-5). Students applying for an internship will be enrolled for the relevant exam. Upon delivery of a certificate of completion of any internship / practice or an adequate document electronically or personally to the secretary of DPES, Hynek Melichar, students will be gain a pass and relevant ECTS credits.
